Being a successful career woman is two-fold; you need to be able to perform at a high level and you also need to look the part. Defining your image in a male-centric environment is important as it establishes rank. Defining your signature look or branding is a personal choice and you have to own it. By that I mean, adopt a style that makes you feel confident, that makes you walk with a purpose and hold your head up high.
Each of us has our own style and that is the beauty of being a woman, we have so many choices from our hair color, to the make-up we wear and the clothes, shoes and accessories we coordinate. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your wardrobe and style. Mine has evolved many times over the years and now I aim for a sophisticated elegance.
To develop a signature look, you have to be comfortable with what you choose to wear. Styling is simply mimicking a look you admire, whether it is a designer, an era, a distinct piece of clothing, shoes or jewelry or a trend. The choice is yours! I know successful women, that when prompted to think about their style, are known for unique pieces of jewelry, or a hairstyle or a piece of clothing that is associated with them. If I were to define my own look, I would say it is one of sophistication represented by skirts and dresses. I like the femininity of skirts and dresses as opposed to pants and that in itself is my branding or signature look. Don’t get me wrong, I do wear pants to work, however whenever I have an important meeting, an event or function, I am always in a skirt suit or dress with heels. It’s my thing!
Consistency is key to establishing your brand or signature look. When you have a look that empowers you, run with it. As your career evolves and you mature, both on a professional and personal level, your look will change. It makes sense that it would. The most important thing is to be true to yourself and create a look that makes you feel confident, as that confidence will be noticed by those that matter, even without you trying.
